Policeman Shot Secondary School Student in Gombe

A Nigeria Policeman has allegedly shot dead a secondary school student at  an inter school games in Pantami Stadium, in Gombe state capital.
The Vice Principal of Government Science Secondary School, Gombe Mrs. Zarah Yahaya said the  incident occured during a football match organized by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as part of inter school games meant to foster unity among the students.
Mrs Zarah said the competition was between Government Science Secondary School Gombe and Government Day Pilot Secondary School Gombe.
“They started the match, one goal was scored against Science Secondary School and students started throwing stones against one another while the teachers of both schools were making effort to control the students.
“They stopped the match and ordered the students to enter their buses and go back to school. As they were about to enter their buses, a stone hit a policeman and he threatened to fire a shot," she explained.
Mrs Zarah said the teachers begged him (policemen) not to shoot, but as the students entered their bus, they heard a sound of gunshot, and a 25 year old SS3 student Sadiq Yunusa got shot on his back  and fell down.
The Vice Principal said “we try to take the student to Hospital but some Policemen refused to open the gate of the stadium until the students protested, and unfortunately before we reached hospital, he passed away.”
"His elder brother Sani Mahdi said the family will watch and see what the government will do before they will know what to do. If Government doesn’t do anything, we may seek legal redress," he said.
State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Fwaje Atajiri confirmed the incident but said investigations were ongoing to unravel who fired the shot that killed the student.
